The registration building will be closed from 10 PM to 3 AM in order for the volunteers to get some rest before the derby.  Avoid the rush and have tags mailed.

We will also again this year have long sleeve t-shirts, hats, and sweatshirts for sale.

The Northern Challenge Fishing Derby held the 1st Saturday in February each year is truly a site to see.  With fishermen and women competing for over $33,000 in money and prizes, it makes the Northern Challenge one of the area's biggest fishing derbies around.  Each year we give away two 4-wheelers, $6,400 in cash, and $6,500 in miscellaneous prizes.  Last year there were five 50-50 drawings that each paid out an average of $1,900.

                                      2012 Northern Challenge Rules

  1. Entry fee is $35  Pre-registration is required.  NO refunds for any reason after acceptance for event.
  2. All fishing is to take place on Lake Simon only.
  3. Contest runs from 7 AM - 3 PM   You may be on the ice but no fishing prior to 7 AM
  4. All New York State DEC laws apply.
  5. Each entrant must check in at the Rod and Gun Club lodge before starting to fish unless your tags have been mailed to you. You will be given a set of tags, which must be attached to each of your tip-ups.  Anyone using an untagged tip-up will be disqualified.  The club is not responsible for tags that someone else picks up for you.
  6. Any unsportsmanlike conduct, as determined by the event officials will be cause for disqualification.
  7. All fish must be weighed on the official scales at the weigh station by an event official.  In the event of a tie in weight the first fish entered will win.  NO DEAD FISH WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR ENTRY.
  8. All fish entered become the property of the event officials to be released.
  9. In the event that an hourly prize is not awarded due to the lack of entries, money will be awarded as determined by the event officials.
  10. No fishing will be allowed inside closed shelters.  All fishing must be done in open view of officials.
  1. Fish may not be held for entry in another hour.  When fish is landed it must either be entered for that hour or released immediately back into Lake Simon.
  2. There are 2 areas that are flagged off (closed), for safety reasons (current / thin ice).  Anyone attempting to fish these areas will be disqualified.  If unsure ASK.
  3. Cash prizes and machines will be awarded at 4 pm at the official truck.  Door prizes will be awarded during the day and must be picked up prior to leaving.  Prizes not picked up will become property of the Rod and Gun Club.
  4. YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN.
  5. In the case of no ice, all prizes will be given away at the prize truck at 12 Noon by random drawings.
  6. No vehicles allowed on the ice other than 4-wheelers and snow machines which are registered and insured.
  7. $800 per hour.  $500 1st, $200 2nd, $100 3rd. Pay out based on 1,000 entrants otherwise 80% .
  8. WARNING!! DEC HAS ANNOUNCED THEY WILL BE HERE CHECKING FOR FISHING LICENSES, AS WELL AS HELMETS ON ATVs AND SNOW SLEDS.
  9. NO ATVs ARE ALLOWED OR PERMITTED ON RT. 30.  WE HAVE NEW YORK STATE POLICE HERE TO HELP WITH TRAFFIC CONTROL AND THEY WILL TICKET ANYONE ON RT 30.
  10. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE PROPERTY OTHER THEN THE ACCESS AREA TO LAKE SIMON POND IS PRIVATE PROPERTY.  PLEASE RESPECT THE PROPERTY OWNERS' RIGHTS.
  11. If you want your tags mailed to you send a self-addressed stamped envelope with your registration.  No tags will be mailed out after January 6, 2012
  12. Park on the opposite side of the road FACING BACK OUT of Lake Simond Rd.  This will assist us in helping people get out after the derby.

NOTICE: Due to the large amount of data being collected and entered it is extremely hard to call and confirm entries.  If you would like a confirmation, please send a self -addressed stamped Postcard.  Be sure to allow enough time for it to be returned to you.  Please make checks payable to Tupper Lake Rod & Gun Club and submit with your signed registration.  Returned check fee is $35 plus entry fee.
